Imagine spending as much as 20 hours per day in a bed looking out of a small window with very little interaction with others. This is just one of the harsh realities for people with physical disabilities in the western mountains of Honduras.

The more we were confronted by this reality the more convinced we became that this should not be acceptable. But in order for the reality to change something would have to be done about it.

The answer? To open a home in Gracias, Lempira where people with physical disabilities can come and stay, accompanied by a family member, for as long as necessary, to receive the care and therapy required for them to recover as fully as possible.

La Casa de Rubén is located near the foot of Mt. Celaque in Gracias, Lempira and it is the only project of it’s kind in western Honduras. La Casa de Rubén is unique in all of Honduras for two reasons. First, it is one of very few places dedicated specifically to assisting the physically disabled and severely injured of all ages who require care. Second, the only criteria for length of stay is the treatment each individual is prescribed. Some will stay for one or two nights while others will stay for weeks or months at a time.

But it is much more than just a place to stay.

It is a comfortable and peaceful place. It is a place where community, fellowship and a sense of family exist. It is a place where people can experience God’s love and peace in a very real and personal way. It is a temporary “home away from home” where healing at all levels takes place.
